How to Make Vietnamese Crab with Garlic Butter

Vietnamese crab with garlic butter is a delightful seafood dish that’s both aromatic and flavorful. This recipe combines the fresh taste of crab with the rich, buttery goodness of garlic, resulting in a meal that’s truly irresistible. Follow this simple guide to prepare your own mouthwatering Vietnamese crab with garlic butter.

Ingredients

  • 2 large crabs (about 2 pounds each)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 6-8 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon chili flakes (adjust for spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Chopped cilantro or green onions for garnish
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Crabs
Start by cleaning the crabs. Rinse them under cold water to remove any debris. Using a sturdy knife, carefully break off the claws and legs. You can leave the crab whole or cut it into halves, depending on your preference. Don’t forget to remove the gills and the stomach sac from the body.

Step 2: Cook the Crabs
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and the cleaned crabs. Cook them for about 10-15 minutes until they turn a bright orange color. Remove the crabs and let them cool.

Step 3: Prepare the Garlic Butter Sauce
In a large pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 2-3 minutes, or until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic. Next, add the butter and let it melt completely.

Step 4: Season the Sauce
Once the butter has melted, stir in the chili flakes, fish sauce, sugar, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all the flavors. Allow the sauce to simmer for another 2-3 minutes to infuse the flavors.

Step 5: Combine Crabs and Sauce
Add the cooked crabs to the garlic butter sauce. Toss them gently to ensure each piece is well-coated with the sauce. Cook for an additional 5 minutes over low heat, allowing the crabs to absorb the garlic butter flavor.

Step 6: Serve and Garnish
Once cooked, transfer the Vietnamese crab with garlic butter to a large serving platter. Garnish with chopped cilantro or green onions for an added touch of freshness. Serve immediately with a side of steamed rice or crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.

Tips for the Perfect Crab Dish

  • For the best flavor, use fresh, live crabs.
  • Adjust the amount of garlic and chili flakes according to your taste preference.
  • Pair this dish with a light beer or a refreshing lemon soda for a complete experience.

Enjoy your homemade Vietnamese crab with garlic butter, a dish that's sure to impress your family and friends!
