How to Make Vietnamese Stir-Fried Mushrooms and Tofu

Vietnamese cuisine is known for its vibrant flavors and healthy ingredients. One popular dish that captures the essence of this culinary tradition is stir-fried mushrooms and tofu. This delicious recipe is not only easy to prepare but also packed with nutrients. Here’s how you can make a delightful Vietnamese stir-fried mushrooms and tofu dish.

Ingredients

To whip up this tasty meal, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 200g firm tofu, cubed
  • 200g assorted mushrooms (shiitake, oyster, or button), sliced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional for a vegetarian version)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro or green onions for garnish

Instructions

Follow these simple steps to create your delicious Vietnamese stir-fried mushrooms and tofu:

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Begin by pressing the cubed tofu. Place the tofu in between paper towels and place a weight on top to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes. This helps to achieve a crispy texture when frying.

Step 2: Sauté the Tofu

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the pressed tofu cubes. Fry until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.

Step 3: Stir-Fry the Vegetables

In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if necessary. Sauté the minced garlic and sliced onions until fragrant. This usually takes about 1-2 minutes. Next, add the sliced bell pepper and mushrooms. Stir-fry for another 5 minutes until the vegetables are tender.

Step 4: Combine Ingredients

Return the crispy tofu to the skillet with the vegetables. Add the soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), and sugar. Stir everything together to ensure that the tofu and veggies are well coated with the sauces. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 5: Serve

Remove the stir-fry from heat and garnish with fresh cilantro or chopped green onions for added flavor and presentation. Serve warm over steamed jasmine rice or as part of a larger Vietnamese meal.

Tips for Perfect Stir-Fried Mushrooms and Tofu

  • Try using different types of mushrooms for varied flavors and textures.
  • For an extra kick, add sliced chili peppers or chili paste.
  • Ensure your skillet is hot before adding the tofu for a better sear.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables such as broccoli, snap peas, or carrots for added nutrition.

This Vietnamese stir-fried mushrooms and tofu recipe is not only a wholesome meal but also a delightful way to enjoy the rich flavors of Vietnam. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or when entertaining guests, this dish is sure to impress!
