How to Make Vietnamese Spicy Pork Soup

Vietnamese Spicy Pork Soup, known as "Canh Thịt Heo Cay," is a delightful dish that combines aromatic spices, tender pork, and a medley of vegetables. It's a perfect comfort food for those who enjoy a little kick in their meals. In this article, we will explore the ingredients and provide a step-by-step guide on how to make this flavorful soup.

Ingredients

  • 500g pork shoulder, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2-3 fresh chili peppers, chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups pork broth or water
  • 200g tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, sliced
  • 2 stalks of green onions, chopped
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pork

Begin by slicing the pork shoulder into thin pieces. This ensures that the meat cooks quickly and absorbs the flavors well. Season the pork with salt and pepper and set aside.

Step 2: Saute Aromatics

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 2-3 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and chopped chili peppers, cooking for another minute until fragrant.

Step 3: Cook the Pork

Add the seasoned pork to the pot and sauté until it’s browned on all sides. This should take around 5 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.

Step 4: Add Flavor

Pour in the fish sauce and sprinkle the sugar over the pork. Stir well to combine the flavors and cook for an additional minute.

Step 5: Add Broth and Vegetables

Pour in the pork broth (or water) and bring to a boil. Once boiling, add the chopped tomatoes and sliced carrots. Reduce the heat to simmer and cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the carrots are tender.

Step 6: Finish the Soup

Once the vegetables are cooked, taste the soup and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed. Stir in the chopped green onions and let it simmer for another 5 minutes.

Step 7: Serve and Garnish

Remove the pot from heat and ladle the soup into bowls. Garnish with fresh cilantro for an added touch of flavor and presentation. Serve hot, and enjoy this spicy, hearty Vietnamese soup with steamed rice or crusty bread.

This Vietnamese Spicy Pork Soup is not only easy to make but is also packed with flavors that will warm you up from the inside out. Perfect for a family dinner or a cozy meal for one, it’s sure to become a staple in your recipe collection.

Feel free to customize the soup by adding your favorite vegetables or adjusting the spiciness according to your taste. Enjoy your culinary adventure in Vietnamese cuisine!
